A study carried out by researchers at Manchester University, England, reveals that microwaves are almost as bad for the environment, in terms of whole life-cycle, cradle-to-grave, carbon dioxide emissions, as cars. They emit 7.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year in the EU, equivalent to that of 6.8 million cars. Across the EU, they also consume an estimated 9.4 terawatts per hour (TWh) of electricity every year, equivalent to the annual electricity generated by three large gas-fired power stations.
